Just to the east of Vancouver sits Burnaby, the third-largest city in British Columbia. The area is host to large shopping centers, lush parks, exciting sports centers, and other cultural and recreational attractions sure to please any visitor.
British Columbia’s largest shopping mall, Metropolis at Metrotown, is located here with more than 450 stores and 10 movie screens. From clothing boutiques to electronics and home décor, shoppers can find anything and everything here. The mall is also famous for having the biggest food court stocked with some of the best restaurants in all of Canada.
For those looking for outdoor adventure, head to Deer Lake Park. The park offers boat rentals, kayaking, biking, walking trails, bird watching, and picnic areas. Deer Lake also connects to a plethora of art and cultural centers. The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts provides the community with exhibitions, performances, craft fairs, and even art classes throughout the year. It has been extensively used in film and television, and its windowed design and terraces make it the perfect addition to the natural landscape of Deer Lake.
For history lovers, Burnaby Village Museum transports guests back to the 1920s and lets them experience what life was like in the region during the earlier part of the 20th century. The open-air museum even includes a vintage C.W. Parker Carousel. With more than 30 original and replica buildings and guides dressed in period attire, learn more about the history of Burnaby and experience demonstrations in various homes and shops such as the blacksmith, the print shop, and the general store. There is also the restored tram #1223, which was a major mode of transportation for both people and goods between 1913 and 1958. A terrific place to spend an afternoon with the whole family, young and old – and admission is free!
If sports are more your thing, Burnaby has you covered. For winter sport lovers, Canlan Ice Sports Burnaby 8 Rinks is the area’s top recreational ice sports facility, with six NHL-sized rinks, an indoor soccer field, and a figure skating rink that is also the home ice for the Champs International Skating Centre of B.C. In addition, the sports complex houses the Thirsty Penguin Grillhouse, a full service restaurant that is also great for large parties and special events.
Another top spot for sports aficionados is the Burnaby Sports Complex. Besides the 10,000 square foot clubhouse, the complex includes five artificial turf fields, three meeting rooms, and other amenities for teams and their fans.
If you enjoy golfing, try the Riverway Golf Course or Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. Both have clubhouses with very tasty menus and a cozy, relaxing atmosphere.
